Academic Seminar with Prof Brian Jacobson THIS Thursday March 17th from 4-6PM at IN222. There will also be a reception afterwards to enjoy refreshments, ask questions, and talk to your peers.

"This seminar will explore the important but rarely discussed filmmaking practices of non-film corporations during the 1960s and 1970s. It will focus, more specifically, on how energy companies used film in their efforts to sell the general public on competing visions for the future of global energy and the natural environment. During these years, oil and gas companies such as British Petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell, and Total; nationalized coal companies in Britain and France; and nuclear organizations charged with promoting the potentials of atomic energy all made films that shared many formal strategies but with often radically distinct ideological aims. The seminar will ask: What kinds of stories did these films tell? What impressions of energy, nature, and natural resources did they create? And why did companies devote resources to film production in the first place?"
