From eminent Canadian director Paul Haggis (In the Valley of Elah), Crash charts the intersections between a group of people in the Los Angeles area who are brought together by several incidents, including a car crash, an incident of harassment by a police officer, and an immigrant convenience store owner’s planned act of violence. The film meditates on issues of racism, and features a notably strong cast including Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Michael Pena, Brendan Fraser and other stars in remarkably subdued, realistic roles. The movie’s unique “network narrative” (a more tonally serious companion to this month’s Cloud Atlas) allows for an at once deeply felt and complex interrogation of racism to take place over the film’s riveting 112 minutes.
